WORK & CASE STUDIES
Icon Modern is a company that aims to save trees by making furniture exclusively from reclaimed, local trees. While there’s nothing new about trying to produce green products using sustainable practices, quantifying exactly how green and sustainable their products are and selling them at a minimal cost is something few other companies can do. That’s also where we came in.
We designed them a new table line, of course. The Heartland Table line that we created for them is now their showcase table with a sleek, refined appearance. Using an “X” design for the table support we were able to cut back on the amount of materials needed to produce it. What set our collaboration apart was our ability to quantify the reduction of carbon footprint that Icon Modern’s processes had. Doing a life cycle analysis all the way from the gathering of materials to the shipping of the finished product, we were able to determine exactly how much better the practices of Icon Modern were for the environment.
Our design came in two versions – one using recycled steel for legs and the other using wood. The design with steel legs boasted a 21% reduction in carbon footprint, while the design with wooden legs soared to a reduction that was over 90%. Thankfully, great work doesn’t go unappreciated in the design world. Our design won an IDEA award from the International Designers Society of America, a Core77 award and a Silver A’ Design Award.
